How to Prevent Car Theft

One of the worst feelings in the world is walking to where you left your car parked and not finding it there. At first, you may think that perhaps you parked it elsewhere. Maybe it's in a different area of the parking lot. After spending over a half hour looking around, you come to the sickening realization that your car has been stolen. Protect yourself from car theft by using the following tips. a car driving down a country road

Location, Location, Location

Cars parked in unsecured lots are at the greatest risk of getting stolen. They are often poorly lit with areas that cannot be seen from the road. These types of lots attract thieves because there are plenty of cars to choose from and they have less exposure to pedestrians and traffic than cars parked on the side of a road.

Use a paid parking garage whenever possible. These types of lots have restricted access with surveillance cameras and security guards. If there are no secure garages available, choose a highly visible and well lit area with lots of exposure to people.

Keep Your Car Locked Up

This means the engine is turned off and the doors and windows are closed and locked. All keys should be on your person when leaving your car.

Don't Leave Incentives for a Break-In

Leaving visible computers, money, jewelry, electronics and other expensive items is just asking for someone to break into your car. The safest course of action is to leave no items behind at all, or to hide items in the glove box or trunk.

Keep Your Spare Keys on Your Person

Your car isn't the place to keep a spare key. There aren't many places in or on your car that experienced thieves don't know about.

Your Car Make is a Risk Factor

Some types of cars and trucks are more desirable to thieves than others. If you are flexible about your choice of car when purchasing, do some research on car theft statistics by car make and choose accordingly.

Install an Anti-Theft/Alarm System

Have a professional install an anti-theft/alarm system in your car. The system should do more than make noise. It should disable the car and require an activator to reset the system.

Avoiding car theft means making your car a difficult and inconvenient target for thieves so that they'll turn their attention elsewhere.
