Proper Protection and Deductibles for Flood and Hurricane Insurance

Louisiana is the wettest state in the United States, with an average of 60 inches of rain each year. Whether you reside in a high-risk coastal area, near a bayou or in a low-lying area, all areas of the state are at risk for flooding.a beach with a pier in front of a body of water

Although flood insurance isn’t required in Louisiana, coverage can help protect your home and belongings from flood and hurricane damage. Certain areas of the state at high risk of flooding, such as along the bayou or the Mississippi River, may be required to purchase flood insurance for a federally backed mortgage. The Protective Risk Agency can help you obtain the appropriate coverage based on your flood risk in Louisiana.

Is Protection Available for Flooding?

Most homeowners policies offer protection for hurricanes, wind storms and hail damage—but not flood damage. Your windstorm and hail deductible is activated if your home sustains damage from a hurricane, tropical storm, tornado or other storm.

Two types of flood insurance are available for Louisiana homeowners. You may get insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), a public entity run by FEMA or through a private insurer.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) manages and makes available federally-backed NFIP flood insurance. Any insurance company that sells NFIP flood policies can give you the same price as the NFIP. And while flood insurance is optional, it’s a worthwhile investment since homeowners and renters’ insurance policies in Louisiana don’t cover flooding.

What Is Covered by Flood Insurance?

Flood insurance typically includes coverage for:

·        Standard home systems. This includes your home’s electrical wiring, plumbing, heating and air conditioning, and gas.

·        Foundation, walls and support structures. This includes your home’s structures and any staircases, as long as they are built into your home.

·        Carpeting and installed features. This includes wall-to-wall carpeting, shelves and built-in bookcases.

·        Portable appliances and personal property. Generally, this covers appliances, such as your oven, refrigerator and washing machine.

·        Detached garage. This may cover up to 10% of your total policy dwelling coverage.

Flood insurance doesn’t cover everything. Your belongings, such as your vehicle, precious metals or jewelry and outdoor property like a pool or garden, aren’t covered. These require supplemental coverage. We can help you with the deductible you need to protect all your assets.

Get the Protection You Need

There is a 30-day waiting period for NFIP insurance, so you should plan for Louisiana’s rainy seasons. We can help you determine the appropriate type of coverage you may need for your home. You may need to provide proof of elevation for your home that certifies how high above water your house is.
